The USS Weeden was named in honor of Ensign Carl Alfred Weeden, USN. He was born in Trinidad, Colorado, on 14 April, 1916. On 22 June 1936, he was appointed a Midshipman from the 3rd Colorado District, He was commissioned as Ensign on 6 June, 1940 and reported for duty to the USS Arizona, (BB-39) on 9 June 1940. Ensign Weeden was killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December, 1941. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart Medal and earned the American Defense Service Medal, Fleet Clasp, and the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal. Fortunately, we made contact with relatives of Ens. Weeden, specifically sisters Mossie and Bernadine. They managed to make the reunion in St. Louis, where their presence was a mutual highlight of that reunion, both for us and for them.
